The Lydd Loop

The Lydd Loop

Approx. 30 miles · Longer ride · Adventure

Ready to give the battery a proper outing?

At roughly 30 miles, the Lydd Loop is one of our longer rides from RYED, taking you inland through the Romney Marsh before looping back along the coast through Lydd, Jury's Gap and Camber.

It's a brilliant full-day e-bike ride with an enormous variety of scenery along the way.

Rye to Appledore

Leave RYED, turn left and follow the cycle path towards Rye.

Turn right onto the A259 and continue towards the roundabout, taking care around traffic.

Keep left onto Wish Street before turning left onto Ferry Road and right onto Crown Fields.

Pass Jempsons and turn left when you reach Rye railway station.

Continue through the station car park, past Rope Walk Shopping Centre and across towards Eagle Road.

Pass carefully through the gate and turn left onto the A268.

Take extra care crossing the railway bridge before turning right onto Military Road.

Now you can settle into the ride.

Follow Military Road for approximately three miles towards Appledore. It's a minor road but vehicles can travel quickly along here, so stay aware of approaching traffic.

At the end of Military Road, turn right across Appledore Bridge and then immediately right again.

Across Romney Marsh

Follow this quieter lane for roughly another three miles, crossing the railway and passing Thomas Becket Church before eventually reaching the A259.

Turn right carefully and ride along the A259 for approximately 250 metres before turning left by the Woolpack Inn.

Continue along the lane for another three miles or so until you join National Cycle Network Route 2 at the T-junction.

Follow Route 2 towards Lydd.

Lydd to the coast

Once you reach Lydd, NCN 2 takes you past the church, around the back of the High Street and eventually onto the cycle path alongside Jury's Gap Road.

Another three miles brings you to the coast.

Cross the road carefully and turn right onto the sea-wall path towards Camber.

This is one of our favourite sections of the route: open skies, sea air and a long stretch of riding ahead of you.

Camber to Rye

When you reach Camber, NCN 2 shares sections with pedestrians as it passes through the village, so slow down and give people plenty of room.

An alternative is to cut through Johnson's Field, around 200 metres down the road on your left.

Continue past the skate park and overflow car park towards the rear of Camber Sands car park.

Sand regularly blows across paths and roads around Camber. Always dismount and push your bike across deeper patches of sand rather than trying to ride through them.

Carefully make your way onto Old Lydd Road.

Turn left at the end and rejoin National Cycle Network Route 2, which you'll follow all the way back towards Rye.

When you reach the A259, turn left and cross the bridge.

Immediately after the fish shop, turn left and follow the path past the playground towards Rock Channel.

Continue carefully along the narrow section towards Rock Channel Quay and onto St Margaret's Terrace.

Turn left onto the A259, follow it around Strand Quay and keep left at the roundabout onto Winchelsea Road.

Finally, turn left onto Harbour Road, rejoin the cycle path after Brede Sluice and enjoy the final stretch back to RYED.
