Pootle Around Rye
Short ride · Easy · Perfect for exploring
Not every bike ride needs to be an epic.
If you want to explore Rye itself, grab a bike or e-bike from RYED and spend a couple of hours pootling around one of the most characterful little towns in England.
From the shop, follow Harbour Road into Rye and make your way towards the historic centre.
Explore Rye by bike
Head towards the Citadel and explore the streets around the top of the town. Rye is compact enough that you can easily jump off the bike whenever somewhere catches your eye.
Make sure you find your way to Mermaid Street, probably Rye's most recognisable street, with its cobbles, historic buildings and famously wonky houses.
From there, explore the lanes around the Citadel before heading towards St Mary's Church at the top of the hill.
Nearby you'll find Rye Castle and the Ypres Tower, before working your way through the town towards the Landgate, one of the surviving medieval gateways into Rye.
There are plenty of independent shops, cafés and pubs along the way, so there's absolutely no need to rush.
Finish by heading back towards the water and riding along the quay before making your way back to RYED.

RYED tip: Rye's cobbled streets look great but aren't always the most comfortable surface on two wheels. Take it slowly — or hop off and walk the bike while you explore.
